About this movie

Robert Redford directs this absolutely delightful comedy of everyday people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. When a Chicano handyman from the Milagro Valley decides to irrigate his small beanfield by "borrowing" some water from a large and potentially destructive site, he unknowingly sets off a chain reaction that erupts into a humorous culture clash. The developers then try to stamp out the modest plantings, forcing the handyman's friends to team up with the spirited "rebel" to protect and preserve their way of life.

I wanted to watch this movie based on a novel written in the 70's I believe. I thought this had to be an updated version. I couldn't believe the review! This is based on the historical battle between the states of NM and Tx based on water right! What makes this such a good movie is that it captures meaning and feelings of Hispanic people and their language and culture. You would have to have a knowledge of the state and people and their beliefs to truly appreciate the intent of the movie. The producers tried to "take over" one of the communities and were rejected by the people.

I have watched it for years, 3 or 4 times per year.. The movie is delightful, funny, dramatic, serious and so truthful about what happens in small communities.
