About this movie

Set in Japan during the 1870s, THE LAST SAMURAI tells the story of Capt. Nathan Algren (TOM CRUISE), a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him. Martial arts and Samurai mythology be damned: to me, this move is about the difference between fighting for a living and fighting for what you love; it's about stopping pretending to be worse than you are in order to 'fit in', finding your true self, and sticking to it; and finally, it's about the Enemy: the swine who not only don't have any honour themselves, but cannot stand those who do. The best I've seen in years.

Historically accurate? No. Will it leave you wishing you were a Samurai? Damn straight. It's easy to dislike Tom Cruise but honestly, this movie fits him like a suit of armour and you won't hate him in this. Great cinematography and music with a story that runs deep. More than just men fighting with swords. it's a good conversation.
