About this movie

In this thrilling Western, a young boy, Rio (Jake Schur), is forced to go on the run across the American Southwest in a desperate attempt to save his sister (Leila George) from his villainous uncle (Chris Pratt). Along the way, he encounters Sheriff Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke), on the hunt for the infamous outlaw Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan). Rio finds himself increasingly entwined in the lives of these two legendary figures as the cat-and-mouse game of Billy the Kid's final year of life plays out. Ultimately he is forced to choose which type of man he is going to become, the outlaw or the man of valor, and will use this self-realization in a final act to save his family.

I felt like the cast was great...the cinematography was there...it felt authentic...but, there was just a little something missing that gives you that happy feeling at the end of a good movie. Seemed like Billy the Kid's character could have been fleshed out more and the boy he was watching over could have been a little less whiny. The storyline should have been congealed better than it was before they started filming.

Great take on a couple of cowboy icons. Not over the top, and not too slow. I have seen some of the other reviews stating not to go into it expecting "young guns", which is a true statement; however, this is more of the real world concept vs the older/"new" westerns. Less about the cool shootouts and action, and more about the story. Solid movie, but will fall short of being one of my western favorites.

Don't watch this expecting a version of 'Young guns'. I suppose that was my mistake. As a kid myself, I idolized Emilio as the one and only 'Billy the kid'. Being 10 years old, watching Bon Jovi's 'Blaze of Glory' video on MTV.. my ears perked up and my eyes as big as oranges. Still one of my all time favorite movies. That being said, this movie is worth the watch. Ethan Hawke rarely disappoints and Chris Pratt was extraordinary. The entire cast was outstanding. Like I said, as long as you don't expect another 'young guns', you will not be disappointed.
