About this movie

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth with the final of three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's enduring masterpiece. Set in Middle-earth 60 years before the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the adventure follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of dwarves on a journey into wild, treacherous lands swarming with beasts of every ilk. After reaching Erebor and encountering the dragon Smaug, Five Armies assemble for an epic battle that could decide the future of all in Middle-earth.

I just watched this yesterday and thought it was actually OK. Some scenes seem a bit less cohesive than others although I imagine they will be explained better in the extended version out later this year. CGI wise and "realism" seemed to be on a par with the rest of them, pretty bleak at some parts of the film although the colour temperature would probably be right for a made-up fantasy environment. I'm not sure the love story part was really necessary however for what it is, the film was enjoyable and own it's own merit was worth a watch. A couple of niggles was the unexplained time differences between some scenes. Again this will probably be explained in the extended or the book if you haven't already read it. Watch out for the those eminent Hobbit/LOTR marathons by the geek fraternity. ;-)

Despite my ongoing belief and/or delusion that Martin Freeman is great casting for Bilbo, this film has nothing else to recommend it beyond the CG, and even then, that CG includes a troll using a hat-cum-battering ram to breach a wall. In other words, the film simply can't decide whether it's a kids film or an adult film. The result is 2 hours that is too frivolous for anyone serious about film or the subject matter (including anyone who read the book), and too violent for young children. This is a film only to be watched for the purpose of ridicule, and washed down with copious alcohol. Needless to say, if I had that alcohol, I wouldn't be writing this having just watched the film. Don't make the same mistake.

I thought this last installment of the trilogy would be great and well rounded off however it seems I was wrong. In comparison to the films it had too much action and I believe due to that its supposedly the last trip of his embarking on a tale to Middle earth(hoped to see the live action carnation of the Simirillian some day besides being fairly disjointed in terms of the book). set film Peter Jackson would be making. That he went all out with his and Tolkien s ideas which came as a bit of a let down.He including a ridiculously placed berzerka troll and another who had mettle stilts and polls instead of standard limbs swinging a large ball and a chain.Like how did he come about managing to stand up and get himself down from Gundabad. Creatures cross between trolls and large orcs in the ruin city of Dale.So I came up with a plausible end result to refer to them as ogres considering most other references that would seem fitting had been taken.Additionally the dragons dramatic appearance in the book was belittled only given a 10 minute time slot to fight and kill him off.It would have been better if Tauriel fell herself of the cliff with Bolg in a Romeo and Juliet motive to throw Bolg.
