About this movie

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of legendary concierge Gustave H. and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft of a priceless painting; a raging battle for an enormous family fortune; and a desperate chase on motorcycles, trains, sleds, and skis - all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent.

There are other films with similarly quirky sensibilities, other films with similarly lovely cinematography, other films with similarly strong ensembles, but I can not recall ever seeing any film where the hero - and he is a hero, bless him, and not simply a protagonist - was a gentle bisexual gentleman whose affections and affectations were depicted with such fondness & warmth, rather than belittled. This kind of character is usually a one-note punchline; here he is celebrated, & it is an unlooked-for joy.

This is an art. Fab humour, great actors, beautiful scenery and outstanding storytelling. Best film in a long time. A must watch, must have for everyone who knows good from bad screenwriting. Can't recommend it enough. If you don't like it you probably need to watch another of Hollywood's action films...

I was expecting the usual hotel comedy drama I'm the vein of Four Rooms, what I got was love letter to the great Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman. Anyone who hasn't seen Baron Prasil, I would urge you to find a copy, the similarities in story telling are wonderfully close. This is film making at its very best.
