About this movie

When Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends reluctantly attend a screening of “Camp Bloodbath,” an infamous ‘80s cult horror film that starred Max’s late mother (Malin Akerman), they are accidentally sucked into the silver screen. They soon realize they’re trapped inside the movie and must team up with the horny, Reagan-era idiot “Camp bloodbath” counselors – including Max’s mom as the shy scream queen – to battle the film’s machete-wielding killer Billy Murphy. Face to face with her mother for the first time in years, Max has a second chance not only to see her, but to save her, and with the help of her friends, get back home before Billy kills them all. Also starring Adam DeVine, Thomas Middleditch, Alia Shawkat, Angela Trimbur, with Alexander Ludwig and Nina Dobrev.

The comedy takes the campy accidental laughs and capitalizes with ease. The horror when it all boils down is something long forgotten and even longer experienced. It embodies these two difficult aspects and yet brings so much heart. The actors are spot on, casting couldn't have been better. It's genius in every aspect. It all works to create the Horror-Com genre perfectly.

Props to them for the great 80s references and upholding underlying horror themes (sex, death, rebirth, grow up, life goes on) ...but it's awfully heavy on the comedy/drama and less on horror, which honestly made it seem like Disney Channel horror. Seems like it's more of a "family film" for 10+ rather than a horror film.

Now I'm not a huge horror guy but I gave this movie a chance. I have to say I wasn't disappointed. The mixture of humor and horror is well done and there is heart that almost all horrors miss. It's worth a watch and the money! Can't wait for the Blu Ray to come out!
