In this funny, heartfelt story, Billi's (Awkwafina) family returns to China under the guise of a fake wedding to stealthily say goodbye to their beloved matriarch, the only person that doesn't know she only has a few weeks to live.

I legitimately have no idea how this got such good reviews. 15 minutes in and both my wife and I wanted to turn it off. But we stuck with it and painfully made it through the full movie. There is so much wasted time in this film. The music is blah. Storyline is meh. Lots of weird awkward scenes. Ending is odd. I will certainly not be watching this one again.

Watch this film, and call your grandma when it's over. Deeply touching story about death and the split identity of a young woman with immigrant parents. Awkwafina's performance is raw and earnest, and Shuzhen Zhao as the beloved Nai Nai will make you homesick. While some scenes appear a little less polished than others, it only added to the authenticity for me. All in all, a very intimate film with terrific performances.

Darkly comic and and poignant film about a rarely explored American subculture- the Asian American experience. It's nice to finally see a story like this told without whitewashing or with the need to explain cultural details to a white audience, and fantastic in exploring how Asian Americans are percieved in the places that they are "really from." Otherwise, a highly relatable film regardless of what culture you come from.
