Saw this when I was seven or eight. I remember renting this movie one night and watched it by myself. By the time it was over, I was terrified. I stood in the doorway of my bedroom looking down a dark hall at night having to go to the bathroom, just 5 feet from me but I couldn't do it. The darkness of the hallway left me paralyzed and all I could hear in my mind as I stared at the dark hallway was Cheryl in the cellar saying..."join us"... The fact you can't see the threat until its after you in this movie makes the horror and suspense palpable. The camera work and forest scenes are terrifying. This movie will forever haunt me.

This film innocently became one of the greatest cult classics of our time ... sparking an equally amazing trilogy that still influences our culture today with gritty catch-phrases and camera tequniques. This is the first movie in a three part adventure that rocketed Bruce Campbell to fame an fortune. The second movie is Evil Dead 2, and the third movie is called "Army of Darkness"... after seeing this movie you'll want to get all three.

Most people need to realized this movie came out in 1981. If you compared this movie with the new ones, people will think is more funny than horror. That wasn't the opinion of many people when it came out the first time. Just like the movie The Exorcist. You watch the Exorcist now, it won't cause the same emotional impact as it was the first time it came out. All the movies you consider real horror movies now will be funny or just okay 10 years from now. I still enjoy the movie and I think it is creepy.
