About this movie

THE EMPTY MAN is a supernatural horror film filled with action, suspense and sheer terror! After teenagers from a small Midwestern town begin to mysteriously vanish, the locals begin to suspect that their disappearances may somehow be tied to a terrifying local legend. Thrust out of retirement, James Lasombra (James Badge Dale), a troubled former cop still reeling from the deaths of his own wife and son, begins to investigate the events that have shaken this community. Things take a bizarre turn when Lasombra discovers a secretive group of occultists who seem to be attempting to bring forth a horrific, mystical entity. Before long, Lasombra realizes that his life - and the lives of those close to him - are in terrible danger in this white-knuckle chiller. THE EMPTY MAN also stars Marin Ireland, Stephen Root, Ron Canada, Robert Aramayo, Joel Courtney and Sasha Frolova. Directed by David Prior from his screen story and screenplay based on Cullen Bunn's novel.

The movie is not for everyone. I was turned off by the poor ratings but I'd say ignore it. It's a slower movie than typical major horror movie releases. The protagonist does some detective work. It doesn't rely on jump scares but if you're not a complete smooth brain, it scares you in a different way. It sticks with you after it finishes. This is a horror movie for horror fans. Has a very A24 vibe to it. Think along the lines of Hereditary. I definitely recommend it if you enjoyed that.

The horror movie genre is the unfortunate host to so many terrible, formulaic films that the genre itself has suffered. The bar is now so low for a horror movie that audiences have come to expect movies to pander to the lowest common denominator. Year after year, 9 out of 10 horror movies are simply aimed at indulging the relentless amounts of gore and, perhaps, a cheap vicarious thrill for any who witness the on screen violence. A good horror movie is rare but the empty man is one of them...

Really loved this movie. I think if you're a horror fan, you will like it as well. The scary bits are truly scary. Watch in a dark room with a good sound system because the sound editing is superb. The ending is a bit weird. So if you're the type of person that hates when a movie doesn't wrap everything up in a nice, tidy perfectly explained packaged, then this movie isn't for you. But if you're ok with a little head scratching at the end, definitely give this film a chance.
