About this movie

Moscow, 1953: when tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin drops dead, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to be the next Soviet leader. Among the contenders are the dweeby Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), the wily Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), and the sadistic secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale). But as they bumble, brawl, and backstab their way to the top, just who is running the government?

Its good but not as funny as I expected given the reviews. The humour is dry like most good british humour, but not as prevelant as advertised. Great cast. Really solid performances. Would have made a better full drama depicting these horrible events in history, or a full comedy. Fully enjoyable but not enough of either genre to be a classic for me.

It wasn't funny. This film is classified as a Comedy and I didn't laugh once... I am one of those people who think murder and comedy don't go together though. I am not sure what about this film I am supposed to laugh at? Stalin's drunk son? The man who is executed in the end who is accused of taking advantage of young girls? Even for a Steve Buscemi lead role. It just wasn't funny.

Excellent acting and satire with a well written script develop this story nicely. If anything though, it could have been more elaborate historically and hence should have been longer.
