This surreal war movie has its biggest surprise in that it is a true story -- the story of Willi Herold who impersonated a captain in the Luftwaffe. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so let's just say that its photography is sublime and its direction seamless. It is rich in symbolism, too, but even when overstated its basis in reality only adds to the farce. The acting is impeccable. This is a modern classic and therefore a cinematic joy. Of course, the layers of profundity are its true source of cerebral nourishment and in those we have a study of human evil; but the irony of what the viewer might at first mistake as allegory, again, is true life.
