About this movie

Hailed as "the best animated feature of 2017" (IndieWire) and "nothing short of exceptional" (Variety), The Breadwinner is an inspiring and vibrantly animated tale about the power of stories to sustain hope and carry us through dark times. Parvana is an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom – and danger. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family. - ( Original Title - The Breadwinner )

I watched this because I saw it was made by Cartoon Saloon, whose first film was Secret of the Kells and is one of my favorite films. I was not disappointed. The story is gripping, emotional, intense. The voice acting is superb. The music is beautiful and haunting. And of course the animation is stunning. If you're worried this might be 'too political' for you, please give it a try anyway - this animation gem is not one to be missed for any reason. The cultural aspects also seem very accurate - being a white American/Canadian I am not much one to judge, but my father spent some time teaching in the Middle East and I saw some things that he had told me about, which was neat. I haven't read the book, but I've seen in around before and I might have to pick it up now. If you like women/girls in strong roles, realistic depictions of others' lives (perhaps different from your own), storytelling, or the art of animation, this is one for you.

I just got done watching the breadwinner🙌🙌🙌it was good😊😊😊not sure if that was a good or bad ending because they weren't all together at the end, but they didnt die! It was sad, and I thought that one hot-head was a perv! The way he treated parvana was weird, dudes on something😂😂😂 it's a good movie, but it wasn't the way i thought it would end. You guys could've at least brought the family together at the end though. There slit up now😭😭😭but I do recommend this movie😁😁😁

Tbh, it pisses me off that AJ is involved in this. I understand the cultural sexism, but AJ here is just a scream for feminism. Don't use pure cartoons to broadcast angry and petty adult messages. I probably won't watch this because of arbitrary political agendas, but Kells and Sea were astounding films. You should enjoy those movies.
