About this movie

Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson star in this inspiring film based on the bestseller about Liesel, (Sophie Nélisse), a girl adopted by a German couple (Rush and Watson) who hide a Jew (Ben Schnetzer) from Hitler's army. Soon Liesel discovers that words and imagination provide an escape from the events unfolding around her family in this extraordinary film directed by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey).

our family was moved by this. primarily the film deals with the oppressions and cruelty of the nazis from a child's point of view although it is a very gentle introduction to these horrors. it provoked some questions. in the end the film is not reaally rooted in the experience of any one character. the opening and closing of the film is narrated by 'death' who sounds like the voice of a cat food commercial. death is very hands off and reluctant to pass judgement on anyone. this means there is no logic or motive for what happens to the characters. this is really a very unfortunate message for a film about nazi germany.

Lacked the beauty that the book depicted and replaced it with a pleathora of cheesy, highly unoriginal scenes, e.g. Rudy's death, please! Shocker.

A great movie - very humbling and moving. The things we take for granted - like books and life :-? Loved Leisel and Rudy's performances x
