Disney's attempt at out-Star Warsing Star Wars turned out to be a grand and watchable failure. The noble cast - including excellent Maximilian Schell - mouth platitudes with sincerity. A better director than Gary Nelson might have nudged them to play this more for larks, as its pretentions ultimately mean the whole thing disappears up its own black hole. One of the best sci fi movies released after star wars, hugely entertaining, I highly recommend it.
