About this movie

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

The Babadook is a really watchable Aussie horror. Davis plays a believable character and you can relate to her rock-bottom despair all too easily. A great bogeyman film made all the more scary thanks to good performances by the cast of, let's face it, two. Unhurried, crafted, and not cliched.

This isn't a film that will scare you in the usual way. (Although it does have it's jumpy creepy moments). It is frightening in a very psychological way. I absolutely loved the idea, the execution is great and the acting is amazing. Well worth watching. (I am so tempted to make myself the babadook book because I loved the design)

If you've had kids you'll really feel for the mother. If you're going to have kids - watch this to prepare yourselves for how much damage depression can cause. A great horror that relies on cold dread not jump scares. Well executed, gutsy acting and it is great to see such topics getting attention like this wrapped up in an enthralling horror.
