About this movie

Six years after the death of her husband, Amelia struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old Samuel – a son she finds difficult to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. And when Amelia begins to see glimpses of the creature herself, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may well be real.

This movie brings Horror back in a unique way. Part fairy-tale, this movie catches you off-guard through its use of dream sequences, camera angles, and plot elements. The relationship between the mother and son can be argued to be the focal point of the story. As in real-life, many of the intricate complexities of such a relationship are explored and add to the overall Horror narrative featured through a strange fairy tale called The Babadook. A must watch.

Acting and plot are all debatable, but this movie is never creepy, scary, or anything to do with the horror genre. As a psychological thriller, it's fine. Especially if you like listening to an hour of a child screaming.

I loved this film! I think the deeper message comes out nicely and makes this film very rewatchable. The acting was terrific and I think fit the underlying tone perfectly. I rate this as a hidden gem, for lovers of horror and who like looking for more than what is clearly shown.
