This episode was a giant slap in the face from the moment Luke Skywalker throws Anakins lightsabre over his shoulder with contempt to revealing that Rey's family are of no consequence. Rian Johnson's attempts to play with Star Wars conventions hurt this film and the franchise legacy. Terrible film filled with hamfisted and inappropriate humor, characters behaving against type to push forward a story that completely dismantled every storybeat JJ Abrams setup with Force Awakens. There is little to look forward to with episode IX in December 2019. First Order will go from strength to strength and dominant the Galaxy, while the ragtag reminants of the resistance (rebranded as the Rebels 🙄) try to recruit systems to the cause. Why is this sequel trilogy repeating the Empire/Rebellion dynamic we saw in the original films? Is everyone at Lucasfilm creatively bankrupt. I could careless where the story ends. There is nothing of interest to explore with the concluding episode. Rey will most likely defeat Kylo Ren (again) and the resist... rebellion will purge the Galaxy from the tyranny of the First Order. I could careless if Kylo is redeemed or not. We have already witnessed the fall of a Jedi to the dark side and his redemption. That story arc was covered over the previous six films. I can only assume the critical praise this film enjoyed is a result of Disney putting pressure on the media. It's 90%+ rating on RT is makes no sense otherwise. And to think Disney/Lucasfilm have given Rian Johnson carteblanc to film and produce a new trilogy post episode IX.

I went in to the cinema with the expectation that this would be the best star wars film yet, I came out feeling ripped off for the fiver I spent on my ticket. The plot was atrocious, various moments caused me to want to pull my hair out with anger (the whole leia surviving scene for one, or the entire casino planet segment!) I felt like the whole film could've been summarised into 20 or so minutes but instead dragged on and on. Snoke was a terrible villain and an even worse replacement for the emperor. The overuse of puppets over CG characters felt forced and rather than increasing the immersion really took away from it. Not to mention the plot holes; how did Hans' cubes last so long after luke died? How did the smuggler guy know the rebellions plans before Finn and Rose? What was the point in freeing the running creatures, they'll just get re-captured! All in all the only redeeming trait of the movie was the birth of Ben Swolo...which in sure many viewers will not appreciate as much as I did. Bring back Steven Spielberg, or hell, even JJ Abrams, he made Johnsons directing work look absolutely pathetic!

As star wars films go it was so so. Had some good moments and a few really bad cheesy moments. Felt the original cast were very under used but I guess that's what they were there for. To link the movies and pass onto the new generation. Felt a lot of the humour was wrong. Why did General Hux become such a stupid prick with no sense. Also the child like fighting between Hux and Ren was really silly. I would compare the last jedi quality to either attack of the clones or revenge of the sith.
