About this movie

It was one of the most daring missions in the history of space exploration. At the height of the Cold War in 1985, an unmanned Soviet space station spun out of control. With the U.S. getting ready to capture it with the Space Shuttle, Soviet astronauts raced into space to salvage it. This extraordinary film moves between the unfolding drama playing out in Earth and the cascading events in space.

It was a very enjoyable piece of semi-fiction. They story of Salyut-7 is one of my favorite moments of spaceflight history, and this movie does an excellent job of capturing the fascinating circumstances surrounding the mission. And the depiction of these events are fantastic! But the film 'fluffs' up the story, by exaggerating the danger and fabricating threats and events, in a way that felt very much like an action movie, and not a historic dramatization. This fictionalization would be forgivable, if not for having "The True Story" right in the film's subtitle. More than 3/4 of the movie is completely fictional! - The presentation was well done, but it borrowed heavily from other, more popular movies. Gravity, Interstellar, Apollo 13, and First Man were all... referenced (some were blatantly ripped off). But the overall effect does really work. The visuals are great, and they reinforce the story well. Finally, I can't ignore the fact that there are *heavy* political overtones. The whole thing felt like pro-Russian propaganda. But I can give the same criticism to many of my favorite American space movies, like Apollo 13. So, take it with a grain of salt. But as an American, the Russian (Soviet?) propaganda felt kinda heavy. - All in all, I enjoyed it. Cool story, engaging presentation, passable characters. Just be aware that you're watching a mostly fictional tall tale.

Awesome movie. I am not a space nut, but this film still had me on the edge of my seat. A great story about friendship and survival as well as beautiful cosmic imagery.

Fantastic movie. The real history is pretty good. Glad they saved the Station.
