I loved this even more than the classic Wizard of Oz. Idk if it's a prequel, but it's Definitely NOT a "remake", as I've read in so many reviews. Obviously u never read all the books by L. Frank Baum. I believe he'd be very PROUD of this. It's def. a dark 1, darker than the Judy Garland W.O.OZ. But, it's supposed to be that way. Like I said - true 2 the books w/maybe an exception or 2, which doesn't take away from the movie. I'd give it more than 5 stars if possible & so would the kids.

This is a cult classic of Disney movies! I have loved this since I was a child. It's not a musical, its very dark but still funny. I think Belina, the talking chicken is hilarious especially now that I'm an adult. People my age (30s) have declared this as a scary movie for them when they were children but not me. I just watched it with my 3 year old niece, a recent Oz lover and she wasn't scared a bit. it actually just added to the OZ characters we pretend to be from watching the original film.

Unlike the original 1939 musical classic, Disney's earlier attempt at directing an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz was not well-written for all ages and it shows with the scary scenes and haunting and disquieting atmosphere. It's very somber and depressing to the point that I couldn't finish it. It has an esoteric happy ending where Dorothy Gale has to return to Kansas and forgot her friends and trip to Oz again. It pales in comparison to its engaging predecessor.
