I came into the beginning of this film with high hopes after reading, and loving, the book. I was to say the least disappointed and confused! There were so many plot holes and none of the challenges matched those in the book, it never showed anyone going through the copper or jade Gate and completely overlooked the importance and magnitude of the final battle! The ending with halliday was all wrong aswell. Tl;Dr either read the book or watch the film, don't do both you'll get annoyed and confused...

It was OK. Reasonably entertaining with quite spectacular special effects. However, I was expecting more. The problem is I thought the book was absolutely fantastic. The film significantly changes the plot and pacing of the book for obvious cinematic reasons but it massively changes the emotional weight of the material for the poorer. For reason of spoilers I cannot say why but, suffice to say, the relationship between Artimi5 and Parzival is much more nuanced and rewarding in the book than in the film. It is this, above all else, which makes the film lightweight in comparison. Furthermore the quest itself is much more convoluted in the book (obviously) which, again, hugely adds to the value of the pop culture references. In the film, these are just window dressing - and hence come across as a bit banal. But it was still entertaining....and I would have probably enjoyed it more had I not read the book.

The biggest mistake I made was reading the book penned by Ernest Cline before watching the Steven Spielberg directed film of the same name. There are quite a number of reasons for this, I can think of 13 off the top of my head but i'm not going to explain my reasons for my dislike of this film, other than if I had seen it 'cold' I think I would have had a better experience.
