About this movie

From visionary director Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) comes a delicious new take on revenge. Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman...until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie's life is what it appears to be: she's wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she's living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

Walking into this movie after seeing trailers for it, I thought I was walking into a fairly typical revenge movie. Thankfully it is not that, it's a thoughtful script and the director knew what they were doing playing around with several tropes of the genre. At first I thought the end would get comically bloody, but it went in a different and ultimately more "satisfying" direction. Great performances, beautifully shot and scored (the violin toxic cover is great) and darkly humorous.

An interesting thriller that takes some great turns as the story goes. The methods of the main character are unconventional to the genre, which makes it all the more captivatimg to see how our protagonist decides to handle things. Also, has a lot more character study-esque content that most other revenge plots I've seen, going into the personal cost of revenge. Warning: you'll either love or hate the end. I've seen no in between.

This movie ought to have a trigger warning for rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse, so I'm adding it to my review. If you live with PTSD from these experiences, be aware, this movie is heavy, so take care of yourself after viewing. Other than that, I think this film challenges typical horror movie stereotypes, which is so refreshing. It does a fantastic job of revealing the truly terrific aspects of the patriarchy that live on in those who participate within the system. Don't trust the one star reviews. Maybe they see themselves reflected in the real monster of the film.
