About this movie

Packed with epic action, OPEN RANGE is a powerfully gripping story that's never been told until now, and stars Academy Award(R) winners Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner and Annette Bening. A group of free grazers, four men trying to escape their past, are driving cattle and living off the land on the open range -- a place where nature makes the only laws. When a ruthless, evil rancher tries to run them out of town, the men's peaceful existence takes a tumultuous turn and ends in the grittiest, most explosive gunfight on film as two men battle a town for honor, justice, and a way of life that's quickly disappearing.

A great western without the myth of the old west. Just men trying to deal with evil and standing up to injustice. This movie could of taken place in any era with some great acting in Costner and Duvall culminating with a gun fight at the end that rivals any I've ever seen in over 60 years of watching movies. Even the romance is without myth with just two lonely, awkward people reaching out to each other in what no one would ever say was dreamy.

This is a "genuine western", with a believable story line and a wonderful cast. The "love story" is somewhat of a distraction but it doesn't ruin the pace of this movie. I suppose the cast is the real "shining light" in this production and the combination of Duvall and Costner is really great in this credible western. The "shootout" is without question one of the best ever in the Western genre. This has become one of my favorites.

Not that I ever liked John Wayne movies! This is the PERFECT send up! Duvall is always great. He's Duvall. The other actors were terrific, too. Bening didn't have that hard edge that's grown harder over the years, and this was Costner's best acting ever. It took skill on everyone's part to do a total send up with complete commitment. It's really fun and funny. MUST SEE! Wow, and Costner directed it. Bravo!
