About this movie

The continuing true story of Eric Liddell’s glorious life after winning Olympic gold in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Liddell (JOSEPH FIENNES) has returned to China, where he was born to missionary parents, modestly avoiding celebrity in order to teach local schoolchildren. In 1937, the Japanese invade China at the outset of WWll. Liddell with his friend Xu Niu (SHAWN DOU), a street smart resistance fighter, recognize the increasing danger so Liddell sends his wife, Florence (ELIZABETH ARENDS) and their two daughters to safety in Canada. Duty-bound, Liddell stays to minister to the civilian victims. Liddell and other foreign nationals are taken as prisoners and placed in one of the many Japanese internment camps where they are forced to endure for two years. Before the Japanese surrender, Liddell succumbs to a brain tumor. Yet his message of hope became immortal. Eric Liddell’s legacy continues to this day as he remains admired as a champion for life.

On Wings of Eagles was quite well filmed. A little hard to follow the storyline at times. However, I do not recommend this movie if you are looking for a movie that accurately depicts Eric Liddell. Overall I was very disappointed with the film. I have read and heard the story of Eric Liddell's Life, and this movie does a very poor job of portraying who Eric actually was. aside from a few Christian Hymns, and a couple crosses in the film, there is no real mention of him being Christian. The conclusion about Eric is said near the end of the film, with the quote something like," The greatest thing I learned from Eric was his unwavering faith in the goodness of mankind". So, aside from that quote being untrue,(The Bible makes it very clear that mankind is not good, and that the heart of man, apart from Christ, is desperately wicked) that was not Eric's motivation. He evidently had an unwavering faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And this movie twisted the message of his life to have almost nothing to do with Christ at all. Very disappointing. I do not recommend this movie if you want an accurate depiction of the real Eric Liddell.

The movie was re-released yesterday for the US. The audio & music has been completely redone since the Chinese release and though the storyline can be a bit confusing, if you know the story of Eric's work with missions, it's easier to follow. This movie is not a portrayal of his missionary work or his Christian faith, sadly, but since it was first released under strict Chinese supervision, I guess it's not a surprise. The Chinese release has many scenes not in this one such as introductions of characters earlier on in the film... but all in all, this is a good movie and a welcome continuation to Chariots of Fire.

On Wings of Eagles is a powerful and touching film with great acting and high production value. Joseph Fiennes' performance was very believable and strong as always. The quality, sets, and special effects are top notch, and could compare to most Hollywood films. I went to the theater to see this, and it was awesome watching it on the big screen. The film is great and I highly recommend it!
