About this movie

Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.

Some people will either love this movie or will hate it. There are NO subtitles in any earth language to explain what the other people (non-earth) are saying. But there is body language and face expressions which to me, told the story enough to understand or get an idea of what was going on. Most people will feel like they are missing half the movie. If you are use to watching movies/shows with subtitles or anime, then you won't be bothered all that much by it. If you want a nice action movie, you may enjoy this but if you can't stand watching something in a different language then it will just annoy you. The CGI I thought was very well done, the size difference blew my mind but was exactly like the game (more on that below). Very action pack like a DC/Marvel movie can be with fast fight scenes. Considering the few monsters shown are only the tip of an EPIC sized iceberg, I though the movie was far too short but can understand why they abruptly ended the way they did for possible sequels. This movie is based on a game (however there is no going from our world to theirs in it). But the game is centered around hunting various monsters/creatures down for parts in order to upgrade armor/weapons to take out even more monsters/creatures and decorating your house with some items, while also exploring a rich vibrant world with lots of lore and culture.

As a long-time MonHun player and lover of bad movies, even I was a little disappointed. It wasn't terrible, but I'm actually glad I waited a week and rented it rather than buying. There wasn't enough monster hunting, and too much faffing around in the desert for the first hour. It picked up a little after that though. The cast were fine in their roles, the CG and costumes were on point too. The music was WAY off where it should have been. It was more like a recycled TRON soundtrack than the appropriate MH orchestral themes. Overall, good bits but not enough, and didn't sound right at all.

Trust me when I say this. As a long time monster hunter fan you're better off playing the games and making your own movie. It takes an hour, an HOUR to even get to any "good" parts. There's alot of things this movie gets wrong, but one thing it sort of nails is the cgi that's about it. I knew this was going to be horrible once I saw ten cent had a hand in this movie, glad I was right. Don't waste your money just buy the games instead they're far more enjoyable than whatever they tried to do.
