This movie was beautiful. After reading some reviews on here I warned my Korean husband that it could have a depressing ending. In the end we didn't agree with the reviews or the idea that the ending seemed unfinished. There were some really funny parts in it too. Definately recommend it. SPOILER ALERT... If they didn't lose everything at the end they would have just split and that would have been a sad ending. However, as the movie ended you could see a) the family sleeping on the floor together rather than all separated around the house, which is traditional for Korean families. b) the wife is with her husband as they search for a new place to dig a well. Before he was on his own. She tenderly touches him as they walk along. It felt like they were starting again, but this time, as a team. It was like the fire put everything into perspective for them. Rather than depressing we found the ending encouraging. Depsite all the hardships, they would carry on. Loved it.
