About this movie

A father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy's special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.

Amazing movie. But it has its flaws. The ending for example: I honestly don't know how the ending could have been done to honor the energy that builds up to it. Gratefully, the meaning and enduring heart of the film do not lean into needing answers about the plot to make sense or about the nature of the mysteries in the film... Instead, the film is a meditation (in semi-supernatural clothing) on the nature of family, parenthood, sacrifice, what we can know about each other, and hope...

I liked it because it was "different" and not all that unbelievable, as physicists these days theorize about multidimensional planes. But it doesn't really go into the science of it so it's a little puzzling what exactly the mission of the movie is. In short, I was entertained and didn't feel like I had wasted money.

I love Michael Shannon and his film choice most of the time. Although, with Midnight Special it seem to leave you incomplete, unable to actually long for something that never was. The concept for the film felt like a brillant buzzing overnight brainstorm which no one actually wrote down. Characters were incomplete, Backstory was discounted and the whole idea was just pointless! (It fizzled out once the screenplay ever began.)
