When her daredevil son Jason suffers a major skateboarding accident, it marks a turning point in photographer Marlene’s life. It becomes clear that Jason’s severe injuries require special treatment in Switzerland. Marlene decides to drive her son from Berlin across Germany herself. While Marlene has the itinerary all planned out, Jason tries his hardest to convince his mother that detours are the true spice of life. What ensues is a tug-of-war between closeness and distance as mother and son grapple with differences in mindset, disappointing each other’s expectations, and inevitably returning to old conflicts. Marlene struggles to control her fear for Jason, whereas Jason seems altogether fearless.
