This really is just ok. Its not the best Marvel movie, nor is it as terrible as everyone else makes it out to be. That aside, I do love the music and the very accurate depiction of the 90s. I really wish Stan Lee would have said something though. That would have been awesome. The visuals and the sound was amazing; the dial up certainly brought back memories. Things I did not like included the gender change of Mar Vell, as well as taking the original Captain Marvel and replacing it with Ms Marvel to be the original Captain Marvel, though I guess it would have been too complicated to do so. At least a nod to Ms Marvel would be nice instead of writing it off all together, like the way Cyclops referenced yellow spandex to Wolvering in Xmen. Overall, its ok. As an origin story, I prefer Iron Man and Captain America. As a fun story, I prefer Thro Ragnarok. I would have loved to see the first female protagonist story as Black Widow as a dark spy thriller instead though, bit like James Bond, but you know, made much better by Marvel.

I gave it a 'Liked It' and not 'Just OK' because of how it fits in and expands the MCU, which I do love what they are doing... The film as a so-called origin story did feel lacking in heart and I think if the writers had made the story a little more personable and developed Brie Larson's Captain Marvel further, rather than skimming over her transformation and putting her right in the middle of an existing conflict and therefore an existing story arc, this would have led to a more layered and relate-able protagonist and this would let the audience buy in and empathize more. However, like most Marvel Studios movies the production value, effects etc were (as you expect with the budgets available) very good. Making Samuel L. Jackson look that young I assume was no easy feat, more so when you compare this with DC's epic fail of special effects in having to remove Henry Cavill's mustache due to contract conflicts with Mission Impossible, truly ruined what could have been a solid comic book film. But, if you like the MCU, it's a must watch; if you are a casual viewer this is a fun female lead comic book action film worth a watch.

Very enjoyable escapist superhero movie with excellent acting (Larson and Jackson really gel, and Mendelsohn a great job as well) and pacing, top special effects and quality writing. Doesn't revolutionise superhero movies or anything like that, but it does what it does very well, with an interesting story and characters, at the same time as tying in cleverly with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also strikes a good balance between 'heavy' and 'lighthearted'. Comfortably one of the more enjoyable MCU movies for me. An easy recommend for those looking for a superhero movie with lighthearted moments thrown in, probably a bit of a harder sell for those looking for something that was more consistently serious. Likely enjoyable for people interesting in general fantasy/action, but probably not a great recommendation for someone looking for a romantic drama :).
