About this movie

There’s a ripple of disquiet in the locker-room when Leon, a new striker, joins the soccer team. Sharing a flat with keen rival Mario sets the scene for an unexpected love affair, but the path of gay love in this macho world is not an easy one. Mario is unwilling or unable to acknowledge the implications of what is happening. But pretend girlfriends don’t fool everyone. And gossip, along with the threat of blackmail, unbalances the team’s morale. With the prospect of a professional career a strong possibility, will Mario forsake the hope of emotional satisfaction for professional gain? This heart-warming rollercoaster of a film, set on and off the field, offers a dynamic and realistic picture of how gay professional athletes are still seen as out of step in the 21st century.

It had such promise and I really thought I'd like this film, but it fell apart after the obligatory "crisis" and never regained the momentum from the first half. The first half was really good and the two of them made a great couple. But the last half meandered around without really saying anything new or profound, just a low-key ending that left a sour taste. The first half however was really good. I only wish the writer/director knew how to make a more satisfying second half or a more complete film overall.

I really liked this film. It relates to an old problem, but with a new and more up-to-date twist. The acting was great. It moved a little slowly at times, but all in all, a really fine film. I hope we see more such films from Switzerland!

I love the Swiss and I love soccer, but I did not enjoy this movie. Mario and Leon's relationship feels forced. Too long, it definitely drags. Some of the soccer sequences felt realistic.
