About this movie

Love & Friendship is an adaptation of Jane Austen's novella Lady Susan in which a beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) visits her in-laws’ estate while waiting for social chatter about her personal indiscretions to pass. While there, the intelligent, flirtatious, and amusingly egotistical Lady Vernon decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant daughter, Frederica. Enlisting the assistance of her old friend Alicia (Chloë Sevigny), Lady Vernon attracts the simultaneous attention of the young, handsome Reginald DeCourcy, the rich and silly Sir James Martin and the divinely handsome, but married, Lord Manwaring, complicating matters severely.

The trailer depicts her as a comedic jerk, someone you can laugh at but you know has a heart somewhere. This character really doesn't. She's terrible and manipulative, it was just unpleasant to watch her. Besides that, the story is rather boring and it ends on a very dull note. The entire movie feels like it was just constantly leading up to something that it never got to. Don't waste $14 on this like I did, it's not what it looks like

I found the movie delightful, start to finish. I disagree with the reviewer who said it ended too abruptly; it was obvious DeCourcy was not going to be able to marry Kate Beckinsale (his family was dead set against her) and her daughter would not marry Thomas, so she changed horses midstream, married Thomas herself and end of story.

I'm a Whit Stillman fanboy, so I'm a little biased. Loved it. Kate Beckinsale play pretty much the same character as she did in Last Days of Disco, except in her native accent. If you're not into talky movies Whit Stillman is not for you, and this one especially.
