About this movie

Based on the Academy Award®-winning documentary, KON TIKI is the story of legendary Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. In 1947, he and five other men crossed the Pacific Ocean in a balsa wood raft, proving that pre-Columbian South Americans could have crossed the sea and settled the Polynesian islands. After financing the trip through loans and donations, they set off on this epic 101-day journey across 4,300 miles of dangerous open water, as the world watched.

This movie was amazing. As a person with Polynesian decent it touches close to the heart. I've always believed our people migrated from south America yet text books today still teach that polynesians all came from Asia. I am so glad this epic movie was made but even more greatful for T.H. sacrafices and scientific work and all he and his men did to prove to the world that polynesians came from South America. Thank you for this well done movie. The effects, music, screen play, and cinematography was amazing.

Just finished reading the book, which was inspiring and wonderful and goofy. This movie seemed too focused on adding drama to the story. While I'm sure things did get a little rough on their voyage, I really don't think this was the most interesting part. Most of what I enjoyed in the book was their process of discovery and figuring out what made the raft work so well, how to catch fish, navigate, communicate, etc. This movie could have been more inspiring.. Instead they added unnecessary drama.

This film is about adventure. For adrenalin junkies, it might drag, but for those with enough attention span to read a long book, it should satisfy. It is about wonder and discovery, proving something and silencing doubters. Its about human emotion in the face of difficulty and fear. Uplifting story.
