John Wick

The movie was fantastic, but was ruined by the obnoxious and VERY prominent VILLAGE ENTERTAINMENT logo blazing bright in the top right hand corner of the rental version, the whole movie. I paid to rent this movie... not to be subjected to an ad for the company that never goes away. Be warned, the logo in the corner of the screen will ruin an otherwise enjoyable movie. Once your eye catches it, it cant help but notice all the way through.

It's a movie of more or less non-stop action. He's no superhero but it seems that bullets just don't work on him. He's unstoppable. While it's not entirely believable, the world it creates is rich and populated with interesting characters. The action choreography is incredible but given that it's directed by stuntmen, probably not entirely unexpected. Cinematography is pretty good and quite glossy for the kind of film that it is. Sound is awesome too. Very violent though, so not for the kids unless they have good grounding of fiction. There's action subtitles throughout the film which also give it a bit of style. Google's version of this film is great with subtitles all the way through.

Dark with single-minded, unapologetic violence. The movie's only 'light' points are when John is with the pup and his mobile phone video of his late wife. The moment he moves into burying his dog and smashing up the concrete of his past the movie turns dark. You want him to get his revenge. There is no light-hearted dialogue, this is cold, stark, harsh violence. It leaves you feeling a little remote from John's character, which can leave you feeling ambivalent towards the movie until you realise the that is it's brilliance. This is not a good guy, with witty sayings, this is no James Bond, but a cold killer with one weak spot and someone made the mistake of poking the bear with that stick.
