About this movie

Acclaimed adaptation of the Marcel Pagnol novel, and Best Film BAFTA winner. City-dweller Jean moves his family to the Provence countryside in the 1920s to forge a new life as a farmer. But his proud, cocky neighbouring rival Le Papet schemes with his simple-minded nephew to acquire some nearby land ensuring the novice owner never discovers an all-important natural spring on the property. A wholly captivating, emotionally powerful and beautifully photographed classic epic of innocence, greed, envy and revenge. 1986 Renn Productions

The sweetest, most enthralling, life`s lesson film ever made. Sublime acting, perfect soundtrack. So close to the ideal film as to be a cinematic standard, all films of value should be graded as percentage of JDF, ie a halfJDF or "almost a JDF" (the well digger's daughter). I have been to all the locations in Provence, the locals still speak of the filming!

Love this film but its like trying to watch it at night with cataracts whilst wearing sunglasses in the middle of fog. Dreadful version even for SD.
