Plot was imbecilic bordering on nonsensical. Basic concepts of space, time and physics seemed to be ignored at the expense of explosions. It's difficult to imagine what motivation beyond money led any of the truly awful actors being involved. Didn't expect too much and thought it'd be mindless fun - looks like I've now determined where 'mindless' > 'fun'.

This is terrible. It is a collection of the most over played cliches you can think of, tied together by the most brainless plot imaginable. I want to find something to like, so I will say there is some CGI eye candy, but that is literally it. Time in the movie seems to contract and expand like it is in some freaky alternate dimension and the plot devices are so wildly unbelievable they make the aliens having a Windows compatible system in the original seem plausible.

I would not call Independence Day: Resurgence a bad movie. I liked the story, thinking that the ideas aliens sending reinforcements to attack Earth a second time & humans reverse-engineering alien technology from the previous movie were both good ideas. What I didn't like about this movie however was the decision to kill off too many characters from the first film, the overuse of CGI special effects (the first film used both practical effects and CGI) & the fact that Will Smith didn't reprise his role as Steven Hiller from the first movie. The first Independence Day was the film that launched Smith's movie career & Smith himself contributed to the film's success. Overall, I consider this film OK, and despite Disney aquisition of 20th Century Fox, I, have hope for future Independence Day films.
