About this movie

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down. Great cast, it has to be said. The story itself is great and has a lot of potential but the script was written by someone who likely has that 'Live, Laugh, Love' sign in their house. The film really loses in the style department. An over reliance on CGI makes the film meh. The whale looks shit and the ocean is obviously fake. Watch Master and Commander instead.

terribly made film. Great story but sadly not worth watching it based on the terrible acting from everyone, including Hemsworth who can't pick an accent to stick to - he sounds Aussie, English and kinda American all throughout the movie. Just, bad acting and bad graphics and not well made at all!! Not worth watching. Sorry :(

Excellent. I loved the historical details regarding sailing and the horror of the whaling industry. Ron Howard has kept tension tight throughout with plenty of action and conflict. It's man against man and man against nature with the ultimate survival coming when the humans decided to stop fighting. Chris Hemsworth and Ben Whishaw are excellent as always.
