Firstly, this is not a documentary involving current US / Russia relations; it is an excellent action movie. Leave politics to the side and base your review on a movie. "Gerard Butler" is a phenomenal actor who was an inspired choice for the Captain of the US (Hunter Killer class) sub. The premise of the movie is silly but good enough. I can't imagine any credible story in which a US sub would be engaged in hostilities with another nuclear or non-nuclear sub. If the current torpedo performs as effectively as appears in the movie, I would hate to be its target. Other character development was sparse. The captain of the Russian sub is unlikely to be near any weapons or sensor platform. The seals did a great job with a thin script that covered them. The action sequences were loads of fun so long as you left your critical brain asleep. The primary story line seems tired...it's not credible. Why are movies overly premised on a military coup in Russia? The odds of any Chief of the joint chiefs losing control are zero. Gary Oldman would have served the need to build tensions best by being in control as opposed to hysterical. This movie was pure fun. The script needs a rewrite, and it would have helped to have significant Russian military input to make them more credible. Foul looks and robotic acting were problematic. This is picky: if there was a coup on either side, the basis for a coup must be credible. Assuming a reason is lazy story telling. Still, criticisms aside I really enjoyed the ride.

A surprisingly good old fashioned action film. The CG was definitely average, but the action and suspense worked. I appreciated the small details they put in that i hadn't seen in other movies before, like the angle that people stood as the submarine submerged. Simple, yet makes alot of sense, but most submarine movies don't portray that. Although clearly fictional, I also appreciated the removal of borders to achieve a greater good objective.

When actors choose this kind of film, to me it means no acting ability just fights, swearing, loud music and bad acting. please go and learn how to act, without the violence andcthe MA rating.
