About this movie

The first Hammer Dracula film which, according to Leonard Maltin, may indeed be their finest. The infamous vampire (Peter Cushing, Star Wars) is given a new, elegant and ruthless persona as he descends upon England. Christopher Lee is smooth as the Count, and Peter Cushing perfect as the tireless Professor Van Helsing, praises Maltin. This film is credited with single-handedly reviving the horror film genre!

When I was a kid there were only 3 Studios: Toho, Universal and Hammer. When, there was a monster movie on TV it was like an event. The street was empty of kids because, we were all inside sitting in front of the TV much, (Too close, of course) to our parents dismay. Hey, it was really cool to be a Christopher Lee fan way before Star Wars, and the Lord of the Rings Trilogies. Oh, and let's not forget Peter Cushing. To, me they went hand and hand like Abbott and Costello.

British accents abound in the Carpathians, but what the hell? This is just bloody good fun. Peter Cushing is crisp and dashing as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee is such a boss as the malevolent count. The 6-foot-4 Lee is an imposing figure -- handsome, athletic and vital -- and is equally adept at skirting the line between nobleman and savage. Good supporting cast, including a young Michael Gough (Alfred in Tim Burton's "Batman"). Considering this was made in 1958, it's got some Polish and has aged well.

I saw this movie on the late show on television in 1968... This was the same year that DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE came out at the movies.. the 1958 version put me to bed with the lights on! Hammer rules!!
