About this movie

This musical version of the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee tells the bittersweet story about an aggressive stage mother and the effects of her devotion to her two young daughters (Natalie Wood, "West Side Story," and Ann Jillian, TV's "It's a Living"), as she vows to make each of them into the star that she never was. Great music and lyrics are provided by the team of Stephen Sondheim ("West Side Story," "Dick Tracy," "Sweet Charity") and Jule Styne ("Funny Girl").

There's something about these pictures, where somebody just breaks out into song for no reason more than they just "gotta sing!" This movie is noteworthy for several reasons, most notably for me because Natalie Wood is a goddess who spends much of the movie taking her clothes off. It has some other high points, but overall is just a classic movie musical (that gets extra points because of Natalie Wood).

I also love Rosalind Russell in this. Some people got it, some people don't...some people got it and are making it pay, some people don't and can't give it away... I have loved this film since my teens and relate to all of the principal female characters. I would say it was my favorite musical but I also like Mary Poppins and Grease.
