About this movie

This is the exceptional story of America's first unit of African American soldiers during the Civil War and the young, inexperienced Northerner who's given the job of training and leading them. Based in part on the actual letters of that young officer and brought to life with astonishing skill and believability.

Denzel Washington definitely steals the show with an intimidating and complex performance. Morgan Freeman knocks it out of the park in a few scenes as well. Matthew Broderick on the other hand, delivers a really empty performance. He looks spaced out in just about every scene. I also can't help but think this film is a bit too self-congratulatory in a "see? us whites aren't that bad" kind of way.

I love the civil war but if it doesn't talk about the confederates because they seceded for their rights just like the colonies did, so was it right to attack the CSA no it wasn't.

An epic telling of a tragic story. I wish this movie ended on a high note, but I'm glad they kept it true to history. Truly a tragic and honest looking tale of great heroes of the Civil War.
