About this movie

Now featured in stunning high-definition, this edition celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the original manga. In the year 2029, the world has become interconnected by a vast electronic network that permeates every aspect of life. That same network also becomes a battlefield for Tokyo's Section Nine security force, which has been charged with apprehending the master hacker known only as the Puppet Master. Spearheading the investigation is Major Motoko Kusanagi, who - like many in her department - is a cyborg officer, far more powerful than her human appearance would suggest. The Puppet Master, who is capable of hacking human minds, leaves a trail of victims robbed of their memories. Soon, Motoko begins to ponder the very nature of her existence: Is she purely an artificial construct, or is there more? What exactly is the ghost? Is it her essence in her cybernetic shell?

Not what I expected. I got this movie because I saw the live action trailers and stuff. I knew about this movie and heard it was amazing. I went into this with too high of intentions. Good things first. It has amazing visuals. Especially for an older anime. There is good atmosphere. And the concept is really cool. I went into this thinking it was going to be full of action. There's only 3 short action scenes. The story was to complicated. It tried to set the lore and story but left me with more questions than answers. There was no real climax and to abrupt of an ending. There was no setting the mood it just jumped straight into it. Like you needed to know what was going on before you watched it. You don't get attached to characters. Many plot holes. This movie had so much potential but it wasn't terrible. I really hope the new live action movie is better.

Here's the problem with the subtitles here: They aren't actual subtitles. They're closed captions of the English dub. The subtitles of the original Japanese version included in the Manga releases-- yeah, they're not perfect, but they're perfectly alright. But what we have here is a double problem-- the subtitles aren't actual burned in subtitles, but included in the closed captions that obscure the screen and come up in weird places. And the translation here corresponds to the English dub script, rather than a proper translation. It's just a weird, amateurish thing to do.

Ghost in the Shell is one of those 1990s memories that are not worth revisiting. Visually and aurally less interesting than Akira, the storyline covered by the movie, to my almost-mid-forties self, feels shallow, contrived, and uninteresting. I fell asleep by the 45 minutes mark and forgot I had it on my Google library. It took me nearly two years to stumble over it and go over the finale.
