About this movie

Hunter S. Thompson went to the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago as a journalist and returned home disgusted, yet motivated by what he'd just seen: violently suppressed protests, riots, corrupt politicians, and abusive cops. Back in Aspen, he finds more of the same. The local police and sheriff's departments are targeting young people, harassing and charging them with absurd crimes and trying to push them out of town. Hunter decides he has to do something to change the police brutality that has become the norm. We follow Hunter as he builds his own political movement, which grows from a local sheriff's race to a national media sensation. He creates a platform in which he envisions completely reforming the sheriff's office and focusing on environmental crimes and corrupt develpers.

I am 19 years old and have absolutely no interest in politics. It makes my skin craw, I hate it. That is why I'm so blown away with this film. I have an extremely hard time focusing on anything, my mind races and I quickly jump from one thought to the next. However, through the entire film I was completely drawn in. An hour and a half ago I never would have thought that something about politics could captivate me so boldly. I really felt as if I was present there with Hunter. Being able to see how Hunter maneuvers through the stiff constructs of the system he is dealing with is inspiring. His ideas are nothing short of genius. I wish he was still alive and we could be able to see what he would have been able to contribute to our recent efforts to disrupt a broken system. I feel like Hunter's main goal was to get people, who had turned their back on government, inspired about what they can do to make a change and that is certainly what this film did for me.

I've been a bit obsessed with the life of Hunter Thompson growing up. Consuming all content I can find on his life and thinkings. Freak Power: The Ballot or the Bomb is a great addition to other documentaries out and the focus on his run for sheriff is a period to focus on. The directors of the film did an amazing job finding photographs and putting never before screen footage of Hunter on the campaign trail together. It’s such an insightful look into the life and mind of Hunter at that time in Aspen. Freak Power is such a beautiful movement & documentary that poignantly mirrors todays political climate, I will certainly be revisiting it again and again.

One of the best documentaries about the father of Gonzo, but from an entirely new angle about how he run for sheriff. I am obsessed with Hunter’s works and life and believe his message is more recent than ever. I recommend anyone watching this movie, even if you are not into politics.
