About this movie

Foxcatcher tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Tatum), who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave (Ruffalo) and a life of poverty when he is summoned by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Carell) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Desperate to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, du Pont begins "coaching" a world-class athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral.

The movie has a lot of S L O W moments. Too much is implied. I remember this murder. However Duponts character wasn't the spooky guy described in all that I read.....with dyed Ronald McDonald red hair....bad teeth with foul breath.....where food could be visibly seen rotting. Its almost as if the murder was okay as the press and wrestling association points out how he donated thousands in a time when athletes didn't make that much money. The movie "hints" at sexual abuse of Dupont.

I think that if wrestling is a big part of your life you might not enjoy this movie as much, as it isn't solely based on the sport, but the story of Dave and Mark Schultz, but if you look past that, it's a great film with some superb acting, writing, and cinematography. Some may find it boring and pointless but it's based on a true story and sometimes real life is that way, and this entire film feels very real and easy to empathize with.

This film kept me tense the entire time. Couldn't help but feel anxious, as the characters, especially du-pont, were dark. Of course I didn't know the about the true story on which it's based, so that may have added to the anticipation. I liked it. Steve Carell was excellent... in an interview with the real Mark Shultz, he said that Carell was spot on in his portrayal of du-pont. There are lots of videos of the real du-pont on YT, after watching this check them out and compare. Great film.
