About this movie

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

I expected a lot more from this film. The great special effects are there but it runs very hollow, there's not a strong enough story or emotional impact to really sink your teeth into. I wasn't invested in the story or any of the characters apart from the muggle who had no idea what was going on. Sadly unlike him I am unable to forget the events of this film.

A million squillion times better than all the HP movies, but: Overlong, clunky, awkward and in desperate need of proper editing. Newt and Tina totally lacked chemistry until the end when there was a smidge. Also, someone please remind Newt that he's not Stephen Hawking. The muggle was likeable - maybe the best character; Queenie, when not inappropriately getting dressed in front of two guys she just met in a CHILDREN'S movie, was a sweetheart. And Credence was well done by the new Flash guy. Everyone else was meh, and where was the diversity? It was predominantly white and straight, which, frankly isn't good enough. Come on Rowling - show some backbone! The story, such as it was, could've easily been told in, 90-100 minutes. The ending might've yanked a few tears out of the eyeballs. Not too bad for Rowling's screenwriting debut; hope she does better next time. Clearly, I didn't miss anything by not seeing this on the big screen and am unlikely to watch it again or even read the screenplay beyond the free sample from Play books. May rent the sequels if Johnny Depp gets to wreak havoc but won't expect anything Earth shattering. The music was good. 2½★
