About this movie

Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Spoilers are ahead, beware. Nathan growing a God complex was to be expected and his constant workout routines/excessive drunkenness were never explained. They could have shown flashbacks of him chasing down one of his creations over that vast landscape or something similar. With Ava, I was disappointed that the story took a dark turn. I expected her to kill her creator but Caleb being left to die? The kid was her only realistic chance of survival outside of the compound, she should've known that.

One of the best executed and yet at the same time most awkward feeling movie I've ever seen. I'm not sure if the actors have really great chemistry, or no chemistry, or maybe they're not really supposed to have any chemistry (?). Visual effects and some of the acting are both very good, but the creep-out factor borders on too much. I wouldn't call this movie enjoyable to watch. The ideas here have been done before, and there is a bit of twist, but not quite enough. Good debut by this director. I'd watch another of his works if does anything else.

I don't understand how this could be classified as anything other than the worst story line imaginable. I found myself after the first 10 minutes, realizing where this plot was going. It was a predictable, boring, and off putting movie, that I could not in good conscience ever recommend to anyone.. that I care to keep as a friend anyway. I honestly can't give it anything more than a single star. The 1 star is only because i have to choose a rating.
