Firstly the film encouraged me to read the book which has informed this final review. My impression was that the film used 'almost' the same storyboard as it were but to tell a different story. This makes the film interesting from two points; analysing what the film means and comparing with the book, how successful the film interpretation was, placed as it was over the book's framework. Finally the criticism of the sandy look of the film I think missed the point that this was not normal life.

If you accept that there is only one Jake Gyllenhall and he is constantly fighting subconsciously with himself to be a committed, faithful husband & father then it all makes sense! He is a history teacher and he acts (3rd rate) occasionally to fulfill a desire for a more free a wilder lifestyle. He is mentally ill and trapped in a repeating pattern. His wife knows what is happening and the spiders represent women, his wife is the petrified spider at the end and his Mother is the one towering over Toronto.

Despite attempting to watch it 3 times I could not last through the entire movie. I managed get through half of it before I decided to wash dishes and do some vacuuming instead.
