About this movie

In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer.

Watching this after reading the book I was really disappointed. During the entire movie there was so much of Ender's thoughts and observations that were excluded. The acting was great, effects too, but it just felt incomplete compared to the book. Edit: After re-watching this several years later I still feel the same. It's a good way to "re-read" the book in a compressed format but there are many scenes and dialogue that just feel rushed and pushed; after watching the Blu-ray bonus features it appears that many scenes were shortened or deleted to keep the run time down, a shame since it noticeably affects the movie.

It's too bad the film makers didn't try to explain a bit more to the audience, instead spending more time trying to replicate events in the novel. It was a short novel, but very dense - not something that can be packed into a movie. Had the plot been simplified to allow for more character development, maybe this would have been a success. I wonder what their focus group feedback was like.

watching a serious production or if it was a Disney Sunday matinee for the whole family. After all, the story's about a bunch of kids, as big as toothpicks and seemingly ill at ease, who are training to one day defend Earth against bad aliens. The answer didn't come easily, especially since most of the time this movie offers itself the luxury of being ridiculous and incredibly boring. And I'll never get an answer, because I gave up at half time, seriously regretting the money I had just spent to watch such a lemon.
