About this movie

A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in DOPE, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself. This movie was so well hyped and rated that I was actually expecting to see something great. But all I saw was really tasteless nudity, drug dealing, masturbation, and public urination... And none of it was funny! But that's just the problem, I couldn't really tell if I was watching a drama or a comedy. This film suffers from an identity crisis and a shallow cliche-ish like plot. I was hoping the characters would develop in the film to give me something to root for, buy in the end, nothing!

The only good thing i can say about this movie is that the main character wanted to make it into a good college... which of course he did, but it was coupled with a lot of unnecessary sexual humor. Like why? These people were teenagers, not adults. Anyway I still give it a bad rating because it goes against my morals.

This movie could be very damaging for the young and untrained audience it was targeted to. Not only did it give a very misleading view on ecstasy but it also romanticized hood life. Over all well done but clearly has socially manipulative qualities. Would watch with a discerning eye and definitely keep away from teenagers.
