About this movie

Sergeant Harry Wells leads a team of British soldiers on a routine expedition to the Scottish Highlands. The six men would rather be at home watching the game, but they are even more dismayed when a carcass lands on their campfire. The next morning, they happen upon a severely injured Captain Richard Ryan and the bloody remains of his squadron.

Neil Marshall was the director, writer, and editor of this film and he has provided some very good talent for a low-budget independent film like this; The direction was simple but very slick with some lightening-quick camera cuts and thoroughly clever timing. As the writer, most of the dialogue is very well written with intellectual lines, and has written some impressive script-writing for each and every element. As for the editing, the screenplay is not messy and the images that were composited together flows like a river. Every time they hear a high-volume sound, the soldiers are armed and ready to shoot and fire with their guns and swift reflexes. The composer Mark Thomas is the stand-out asset of the emotional aspect of the film with an effectively dynamic orchestral score to enhance each and every scene (particularly the action sequences). The Werewolves look absolutely riveting in a vicious, fearsome way. And they look exactly what one could desire what a werewolf should look like without clothes. This British action horror thriller has held my interest through the whole film, but I wasn't hugely entertained by it (I didn't enjoy it immensely), and I don't think it is a masterpiece. Why? well, I'll tell you: Even though that most of the writing is utterly impressive throughout, there is this unacceptable scene involving a gun and a dog in the beginning, and there is a preposterous and cheesy backstory involving a guy named Eddie. The plot of the film is basically Jaws (1975) meets Predator (1987) but with werewolves; The men are macho soldiers with brazen, valiant, daring personalities, a women in the beginning was killed by these canine monsters, there are moments where the camera plays the eyes of the werewolf, showing the villains in the second half of the film, and how the final defeat was written. But the concept of not showing the villain is what makes it so suspenseful and gripping, but unfortunately, unlike jaws, the tone and script-writing does not make their presence effective and memorable, and compared to those two movies, it is more cursory. The characters are pretty superficial, it's just a bunch British actors saying deep lines, following the script, and providing typical regular behaviors of British people (that's just about it). In conclusion: It's cursory and unoriginal with two worthless elements, but it's a solid, well-crafted, old-fashioned action horror film that has captivated me and impressed me.

I love this movie. Considering the budget the costumes and effects are great. Healthy mix of suspense, humor, and horror. I'm upset that they were never able to make the sequel.
