About this movie

Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery Nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths old scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it's too late.

Not only that this modern 3D adaptation of the timeless story is faithful to the source material, Christmas Carol is also emotionally immersive with Jim Carry delivering such a unique performance. Although it remains respectful to the source material, this is not a perfect Christmas movie. It has a several amount of jumpscares that can make this Christmas film extremely frightening for younger kids, which is why the combination of the look of the animation and the freaky elements make this film appropriate for kids age 10 and up. The character designs are like book illustrations coming to life in a 3D life-like format, thanks to the use of the motion capture "uncanny valley" animation, not to mention there is a lot of detail on the human skin, the clothing, and even the metal steel like material. Unlike other films that starred Jim Carry, This one has Jim playing more of a serious mature role, his performance shows that Jim really knows who Ebenezer Scrooge is, and he did a great job with his role as the grumpy old man himself. Other characters like the spirits of the past, present, and future are gripping and fun to watch. The use of 3D has moments where you and Scrooge feel like flying in the air like Superman. The film does a great job with the storytelling overall in terms of the direction, the mood, the music score, and the use of 3D. The music score was a moving support to the film, Alan Silvestri (the composer) knows how to make orchestral music big, dramatic, energetic, triumphant, and thrilling, He can also make the true example Christmas orchestral sound in movies. His score really makes the story move and makes the emotion effective. The 3D animated backgrounds brings such a surprising feel of nostalgia back in the old days of warm Christmas. To conclude: Christmas Carol is a brilliant yet frightening Christmas movie that brings the nostalgia of the story to the modern world, and parents will be probably be impressed. recommended.

I particularly like watching different adaptations of this Dickens classic around this time of year (writing this just before Christmas). Although the overall story remains intact in this CG animated version, the poignancy of the novel is diluted through comic relief at the wrong time. Marley's speech concerning charity, forbearance, and the common welfare is destroyed due to the unhinging of Marley's jaw, rendering him unable to enunciate the verbiage. The chase with the hearse is wasted screen time. It's ironic that this great story of the consequences of the pursuit of wealth above all other things, has fallen victim to the Disney machine. Having said that, Scrooge's reformation never ceases to bring me to tears whatever the version of the tale.Read it to your kids though. They'll appreciate the voice impressions.

Again, this is not a full five star worthy film, but it is far from only being four stars. I would most likely give it a 4.6 so rounding up to five. It is super dark and even though it is sold as a kid movie, it may give your little family a bit of a scare. We loved this movie, and it portrays all the ghosts so freaking well that I had to review it. Jim Carrey plays all the main characters in the film, and does it bloody well. It is definitely my favorite version of the Christmas Carol.
