Darkness Visible

Move over A Quiet Place, there’s a new silent thriller in town! Darkness Visible might have substantially more dialogue than its mute counterpart, but in my opinion, this is how the sub-genre should be treated. The continued anticipation of A Quiet Place loses its effect quickly, but Darkness Visible is able to break up its extended periods of silence with conversations that continue the plot and give audiences a false sense of security, only to return back to its eerily taciturn ways. This approach to the style of filmmaking is much more frightening, and therefore what should be the go-to of horror/thrillers going forward.

Darkness Visible is a welcomed addition to the supernatural horror genre. As an avid fan of horror/thrillers, I’ve seen my fair share of supernatural ghost stories and I know how saturated the genre has become with films that feel like they’ve already been done before. However, Darkness Visible has gone around that by moving away from the Americas and Europe and taking place instead in India. This gives the film so much more room to play with an added ability to dive into, and take full control of, completely unfamiliar territory (at least for a westerner like me). I had an absolute joy watching this film, what with its intriguing and captivating visuals, a story not rooted in gimmicks or cheap scares, and a very unsettling and eerie antagonist; it delivered and then some. The film brought an interesting twist to the genre, and with it, created new unsettling nightmares that set it apart and above many other horror films I’ve seen. I definitely recommend this movie if you want a story that feels different and new, or if you’re just in need of a good‘ol scare.

This is NOT your usual horror film. Its better. Although it follows a murder trail that is both supernatural and demonic, much like other movies, Darkness Visible employs much more sinister and graphic visuals to maintain your attention long after watching it. The plot twists also contribute to the fast-paced nature of the film, building suspense in every scene, until its shocking ending. If you’re bored of watching the same old “jump-scare” thrillers that are out everywhere, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try.
